Netflix to offer therapy drama

Netflix has ordered a psychological thriller that follows the life of a therapist who oversteps her professional boundaries.

Gypsy focuses on Jean Holloway, “a therapist who begins to develop dangerous and intimate relationships with the people in her patients’ lives,” according to the US SVoD service.

The 10-episode series hails from Lisa Rubin (I Was Here), who exec produces with Liza Chasin, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.

The drama will premiere in 2017, with and Universal Television and Working Title producing.

In related news, Netflix has extended its current multi-year content agreement with DreamWorks Animation (DWA) so that a number of original series based on new and classic IP from the studio will arrive on its service in 2016.

These include a reboot of 1980s series Voltron and Trollhunters, the new series from Hollywood director Guillermo del Toro.

The deal also covers streaming rights to the DWA feature film library and sees Netflix hold on to second window rights for series such as The Adventures of Puss in Boots everywhere around the world, barring China.

The news comes in the same week that Netflix ordered Je Suis Charlie, a documentary marking the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the Paris offices of satire magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The doc, from French distributor Pyramide International, examines the attacks that left 12 dead and 11 others wounded on January 7, 2015.

Meanwhile, Netflix is expected to launch in India within the next few days and reports are circulating that the streamer will make its foray into Russia this month.
